The beach is a graveyard for things which thought shells would protect them.

Hey he is just a shell of who he used to be. It wasn't easy living in a pineapple undersea with a star fish. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

For all you know that shell did protect its inhabitant for a good long shellfish lifestyle.
I for one am grateful that billions of such creatures suck up so much toxic CO2.

So you really can't recommend a book on 17th century Dutch art? How about non illustrated?

I was counting on you.

Well, you should see the episode of Sister Wendy when she goes to Amsterdam. I follow her school of art interpretation and she spells it out pretty good there.

And you should watch The Girl with a Pearl Earring, only because it's a period piece.

Here's an obvious source, also.

But if you are going to go to the Netherlands and look at the art, don't read a book about it first. Read it afterwards. It's like reading all about a film before you go see it. All the paintings you see would have been new to the people in the 17th century and there's no reason why they shouldn't be new to you either.

That's my recommendation.
